The cover and illustrations are by Katrina van Grouw. I first encountered Katrina’s art a few years ago on the wall of Mark Cocker’s home: a huge, powerful albatross crossing a brooding sky and stormy sea – and I loved it. In fact, it is the first image you see on her web site.

I was surprised then to later see Katrina’s very different ‘unfeathered birds’ at the Bird Fair in 2010. These anatomically exact, quirky and attractive pencil images reminded me of some of George Stubbs’s work from the early 1800s, one of which I had included in ‘The Wisdom of Birds’. We chatted at the Bird Fair and I went home with my head buzzing with her extraordinary images. When Katrina later agreed to do the drawings for ‘Bird Sense’ I couldn’t believe my luck.
